Impact

Year 6/7 Ready to

Learn Nurture Groups

Our Year 6/7 Ready to Learn curriculum is designed for pupils who may have experienced disruption to their education and require additional support to re-engage with learning. Through a nurturing, relationship-based approach, we provide a safe and structured environment where pupils develop confidence, emotional regulation and positive attitudes towards learning. The curriculum follows a primary-style model that prioritises literacy, numeracy and communication skills while addressing gaps in prior learning through explicit teaching and carefully scaffolded support. Engaging cross-curricular themes, life skills education and outdoor learning opportunities help pupils develop resilience, independence and social skills. Our intent is to ensure pupils build secure academic and personal foundations, enabling them to become successful learners who are prepared for the next stage of Key Stage 3.

Pupils follow a primary model of delivery with explicit teaching of classroom routines and expectations. Core knowledge and vocabulary are repeatedly taught and reinforced through structured, scaffolded learning sequences. Topic-based learning delivers history, geography, religious studies and ICT. Targeted interventions address literacy, attendance, and emotional regulation needs. As pupils become secure and confident, they gradually access specialist rooms/teaching (e.g., Food Tech/DT/PE) with LSA support.

Our curriculum is designed to be flexible enough to ensure staff are aware of pupils' SEMH needs and can plan responsively, whilst ensuring essential literacy and numeracy knowledge is secure through structured, explicit teaching approaches. Many pupils arrive with considerable gaps in their primary education, so we focus on these core skills in KS3, using scaffolded literacy strategies to build confidence and competence.

Year 7/8 Ready to

Learn Purple, Red

and Blue Groups

The Year 7/8 Ready to Learn curriculum supports pupils in becoming increasingly independent, confident and ready for future learning. Building on the foundations established in nurture provision, it combines academic development with ongoing support for social, emotional and mental health needs. Through a blended KS2/KS3 curriculum, pupils develop secure subject knowledge, literacy and numeracy skills, alongside the vocabulary and reading strategies needed to access a wider curriculum. Structured opportunities for collaboration, personal development and life skills enable pupils to strengthen communication, resilience and self-regulation. Our intent is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to access specialist teaching, make informed choices about their future and transition successfully towards Key Stage 4.

Pupils follow a blended KS2/KS3 curriculum with continued explicit instruction and modelling. Core subject knowledge and vocabulary are systematically repeated and deepened. Structured group work develops social skills, with regular personal development sessions integrate. Reading-to-learn strategies including guided reading and writing support literacy development across subjects.

Pupils demonstrate increased independence and readiness for KS4 option choices. They develop stronger subject-specific vocabulary and improved literacy skills through systematic reading-to-learn strategies. Social skills strengthen through structured group work opportunities. Pupils build a secure knowledge base through repeated exposure to core concepts.

Key Stage 4

(Yrs 9-11)

Progression through the Key Stage 4 curriculum

is clearly sequenced from

Foundation and Entry Level qualifications

through to Level 1 and 2 qualifications. We

undertake a yearly curriculum review to ensure

that our curriculum meets pupil needs, is clearly

sequenced, and allows sufficient challenge.

We have endeavoured to offer as wide a

curriculum as possible, within the constraints of

the size of our Academy. Pupils in Key Stage 4

are offered a wide range of academic and

vocational options that prepare them well for

progression on to the next stage of their

education or training. We recognize that pupil

option choices and our Academy size may result

in some narrowing of the curriculum. To

mitigate we are designing a Pastoral curriculum

that focuses on the key ideas, concepts and

knowledge that we would expect all young

people to have experienced by the time they

reach the end of Year 11.

Pupils begin a Key Stage 4 curriculum in Year 9. Core curriculum includes English, Mathematics, ICT, Life Skills, Careers and PE, with explicit modelling of exam responses and scaffolded writing approaches. Pupils choose 4 optional subjects from a wide range of academic and vocational options. All subjects follow sequential progression enabling accreditation from Entry Level to Level 2 where possible, building confidence and motivation through early recognition of achievement.

We aim to give all our pupils and their families the hope, compassion, experience and qualifications to enable them to take their place in the World. We build their skills and

confidence so that they can learn

to recognise their emotions,

self-regulate, and develop

strategies to express themselves

safely We ensure that everyone

is seen and known as an

individual, and offer them

tailored pathways to meet their

individual goals.

Pupils reach the end of Year 11

with the essential academic,

social and emotional skills to

successfully transition into

mainstream college placements

and take the next step in their

educational journey. In our most

recent inspection Ofsted noted

that “pupils in key stage 4 gain

suitable qualifications and are

prepared well for the next stage

of their education or training”.
