Why We Study Computing
Computing at Ramsden Hall Academy equips our pupils with essential digital skills for life, work, and further education. In today's digital world, computing skills are fundamental to success in almost every career path and everyday life. Our curriculum empowers pupils to become confident, capable, and safe digital citizens.
We provide a practical, hands-on approach that builds from foundational digital literacy through to industry-recognised qualifications. Our pupils develop skills in programming, digital communication, data handling, online safety, and creative digital content creation. We understand that our pupils may have gaps in their prior learning, so our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build confidence whilst developing technical competence.
Most importantly, Computing gives our pupils the practical skills employers value and the digital confidence needed for independent living. Understanding how to use technology safely, create professional digital content, communicate effectively online, and protect personal information equips them to navigate modern life with greater confidence and independence. Through recognised qualifications including NCFE Digital Skills for Work and Pearson/Edexcel Functional Skills Digital Technology, we prepare pupils with the practical skills employer’s value and the digital confidence needed for independent living.
Our Five Aims
1. Develop Essential Digital Literacy Skills
Pupils will understand how to use devices, applications, and the internet safely and effectively for both personal and work contexts. By mastering file management, system settings, connectivity and troubleshooting, pupils develop the foundational digital competence needed for education, employment and everyday life.
2. Create and Communicate Digitally with Professional Standards
Pupils will learn to create, edit, and format professional documents, presentations, and digital media suitable for different audiences and purposes. Through word processing, spreadsheet modelling, graphic design and presentation software, pupils develop the ability to communicate ideas clearly and professionally in digital formats.
3. Stay Safe and Responsible Online
Pupils will understand online risks, protect personal information, respect others online, and make informed decisions about digital footprints. Understanding cybersecurity, data protection legislation, and digital citizenship prepares pupils to navigate the online world safely and responsibly whilst protecting their wellbeing and privacy.
4. Develop Computational Thinking and Programming Skills
Pupils will learn to think logically, solve problems, and create programs using languages including Scratch, Python, and JavaScript. Understanding algorithms, variables, selection, iteration and data representation develops problem-solving skills and logical thinking that transfer across all areas of learning and life.
5. Prepare for Employment and Further Education
Pupils will build a professional online identity, create CVs, apply for opportunities, and develop the digital skills employers require. Understanding professional digital communication, online job applications, and workplace digital tools ensures pupils are ready for the next stage of their education or career journey.
How We Teach Computing
Curriculum Structure
Our KS3 curriculum builds foundational computing skills and prepares pupils for KS4 qualifications. Year 8 begins in Autumn Term with E-Safety (understanding online risks, cybercrime, digital footprints, and responsible digital citizenship) and Introduction to Coding (using Scratch or JavaScript to understand algorithms, computational thinking, and basic programming concepts). Spring Term develops Spreadsheet Modelling (using Excel to store, organise, analyse data, create charts, and understand databases) and Graphic Design (creating professional vector graphics and learning image manipulation techniques). Summer Term focuses on Programming (developing Python skills including variables, selection, iteration, and problem-solving) and Data Representation (understanding how computers represent information using binary, including text, numbers, and images).
Years 9 and 10 follow the Entry Level 3 / Level 1 Functional Skills Digital Technology pathway. Autumn Term covers Using Devices and Handling Information (device types and features, connectivity, applications, system settings, internet navigation, file management, and troubleshooting) and Creating and Editing (using word processing and presentation software to create professional documents with text, numbers, and graphics). Spring Term develops Communicating (email skills, video calls, managing contacts, and understanding digital footprints), Transacting (completing online forms, understanding data validation and verification), and Being Safe and Responsible Online (online risks, protecting personal information, security features, and physical wellbeing). Summer Term focuses on examination preparation and assessment.
Years 10 and 11 follow the NCFE Digital Skills for Work (Units 1-4) pathway. Autumn Term covers Unit 1 - Finding and Selecting Information (search techniques, evaluating sources, copyright, file housekeeping, and data storage procedures) and Unit 2 - Staying Safe Online (threats to personal data, protecting information, trustworthy sources, secure websites, and legislation including GDPR and Data Protection Act). Spring Term develops Unit 3 - Using Digital Communication (professional email, instant messaging, video conferencing, Microsoft Teams, online safety, and data protection in workplace contexts) and begins Unit 4 - Professional Online Identity (social media and employment, creating professional profiles including LinkedIn, online CVs, job applications, and interview preparation). Summer Term completes Unit 4 (career planning using digital tools, assessing digital skills, and accessing online learning opportunities) with assessment preparation.
Building Knowledge and Skills from Varied Starting Points
We begin each year with baseline assessments to understand pupils' starting points. Our curriculum is sequenced to fill gaps in learning whilst maintaining progression, ensuring no pupil is left behind. The curriculum builds systematically from foundational digital literacy and online safety in Year 8 through to professional workplace digital skills and industry-recognised qualifications at KS4.
Pupils work within their chronological year groups but receive differentiated support based on their individual needs. Our schemes of work include three levels of differentiation (Developing, Excellence, and Mastery), differentiated questioning, mixed and similar ability pair work, and varying levels of teacher and LSA support. Practical activities allow pupils to work at their own pace with scaffolded support, whilst extension activities challenge pupils who progress more quickly. Key concepts and skills are revisited regularly through starters, plenaries and practical application to support retention and build confidence.
Trauma-Informed Teaching Approach
Our teaching approach recognises pupils' SEMH needs through flexible lesson structures responsive to pupil regulation, regular breaks and movement opportunities, clear, structured tasks with visual supports, opportunities for collaborative and independent work, celebration of achievements and progress, and safe spaces to make mistakes and learn from them.
Lesson timings are flexible based on pupil progress and regulation needs, allowing us to adapt to how pupils are feeling and learning on any given day. Computing lessons provide predictable structures with clear success criteria, reducing anxiety about expectations. Pupils can choose between collaborative pair work or independent tasks based on their emotional presentation, maintaining engagement whilst giving pupils agency over their learning environment.
Technology can be frustrating when things don't work as expected. We normalise technical difficulties as part of the learning process, model problem-solving strategies, and provide immediate support when pupils become frustrated. We celebrate debugging and troubleshooting as valuable learning opportunities rather than failures.
Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Development
Throughout Computing, we develop literacy through reading briefs, case studies, and tasks; writing in professional, customer-focused tones; and understanding key exam command words (recall, evaluate, understand, demonstrate, interpret, apply, analyse). Key vocabulary is revisited in starters and plenaries, with lesson key terms displayed on the board.
Computing systematically develops technical vocabulary including algorithm, variable, iteration, selection, binary, encryption, malware, phishing, GDPR, data protection, validation, verification, digital footprint, computational thinking and workplace terminology. Reading skills are developed through interpreting task briefs, evaluating online sources, and understanding technical documentation. Writing skills progress from basic formatting to professional business communication, creating CVs and cover letters, and writing for specific audiences and purposes.
Pupils develop numeracy skills through analytical and interpretational skills, presenting data in graph form (including Gantt charts), understanding file sizes, working with timelines, and considering financial implications. Programming develops mathematical thinking through variables, calculations, logical operators and problem-solving. Spreadsheet work embeds formulae, data analysis, chart creation and working with numerical data in authentic contexts.
SMSC, British Values and Modern Britain
SMSC: Computing lessons explore moral and ethical issues including online behaviour and cyberbullying, privacy and data protection, digital piracy and copyright, environmental impact of technology, and artificial intelligence ethics. Pupils consider the social impact of technology and the importance of responsible digital citizenship.
British Values: Democracy explored through online participation and digital democracy; rule of law through understanding legislation (GDPR, Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, Copyright Law); individual liberty through making informed choices about technology use and online presence; tolerance through respectful online communication and understanding diverse digital communities.
Modern Britain: Understanding digital literacy, online safety, professional digital identity, remote working, digital services, cybersecurity and data protection prepares pupils for informed citizenship and contemporary life. Topics like online risks, digital wellbeing and professional online presence are handled sensitively and age-appropriately, recognising pupils' varied experiences with technology.

Academic Progress and Achievement
Our progressive qualification pathway from foundational digital literacy through to NCFE Digital Skills for Work and Functional Skills Digital Technology ensures every pupil can achieve recognition for their progress. We use a range of assessment approaches including direct and indirect questioning, observation during activities, completed practical tasks, peer and self-assessment, extension activities, teacher feedback and green pen marking, and formal assessments and examinations. Regular formative assessment checks understanding and addresses misconceptions immediately. Pupils progress from basic device use and online safety awareness to creating professional digital content, communicating effectively in workplace contexts, and demonstrating comprehensive digital competence in industry-recognised qualifications.
Personal Development and Confidence
Every lesson includes practical activities where pupils apply their learning. We use real-world scenarios and authentic tasks to make learning relevant and engaging. Successfully completing practical tasks—creating professional documents, designing graphics, writing programs, conducting online research, building professional profiles—creates a sense of achievement and demonstrates that learning can be accessible and rewarding. Understanding how to use technology confidently and safely helps pupils feel more empowered in their digital lives. Safe, supportive learning environments where technical difficulties are normalised as learning opportunities reduce anxiety about making mistakes.
Communication and Digital Capability
Pupils progress from basic digital communication to professional workplace standards, with improved ability to use technical vocabulary, write professional emails, create polished presentations and communicate ideas effectively through digital media. Understanding online safety, data protection and responsible digital citizenship equips pupils to navigate the digital world safely throughout their lives. Programming and computational thinking develop logical problem-solving skills that transfer across all areas of learning.
Preparation for Life Beyond School
Our Computing curriculum prepares pupils for further education (Level 2 and Level 3 IT qualifications, BTECs in Digital Technology, A-Levels in Computer Science, Apprenticeships in IT and Digital sectors), employment (developing skills valued across all employment sectors including digital communication and collaboration, creating professional documents and presentations, online safety and data protection awareness, problem-solving and logical thinking, professional online presence and job application skills), and independent living (managing personal information safely online, using digital services and transactions, communicating professionally, protecting themselves from online risks, using technology to support health, wellbeing, and lifestyle).
Industry-recognised qualifications provide recognised academic achievement that supports progression to college courses, apprenticeships or employment, while transferable skills in digital literacy, communication, problem-solving and professional digital identity support success across all areas of life in our increasingly digital world.
Monitoring and Evaluation
We measure impact through ongoing formative assessment (questioning, observation, practical task completion, peer and self-assessment), summative end of unit assessments, qualification outcomes (NCFE Digital Skills for Work, Functional Skills Digital Technology), pupil voice (feedback about engagement, confidence and digital capability), and work scrutiny (reviewing progression in technical skills, digital communication and computational thinking).
