Why We Study Science
Science is transformative for pupils with SEMH needs because it provides a structured, predictable framework for exploring the world while building confidence through achievable success. Practical work allows pupils to experience success in different ways, building self-esteem and demonstrating that learning can be accessible and rewarding. The investigative nature of science encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and resilience when experiments don't go as planned.
Science gives our pupils the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health, environment, and future. Understanding topics like nutrition, disease prevention, energy, and the natural world equips them to navigate their lives with greater confidence and independence, while the progressive qualification pathway from Entry Level to IGCSE ensures every pupil can achieve recognition for their progress.
Our Four Aims
- Develop Scientific Knowledge and Understanding – Build comprehensive understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics through a carefully sequenced curriculum progressing from Entry Level to IGCSE Combined Science
- Build Confidence Through Practical Skills – Experience regular achievement through differentiated pathways, hands-on practical work, scaffolded activities, and supportive assessment
- Strengthen Communication, Literacy and Numeracy – Develop ability to express scientific ideas through structured discussion, practical write-ups, and extended writing, with mathematical skills embedded throughout
- Cultivate Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving – Learn to plan investigations, analyse evidence, evaluate conclusions, and think logically
How We Teach Science
The curriculum operates on a two-cycle system (Cycle 1 - Even years, Cycle 2 - Odd years) for Years 6/7 and 7/8 to ensure comprehensive coverage for pupils who may join at different times. All pupils work towards IGCSE Combined Science, with Entry Level qualifications providing stepping stones and recognition of progress along the way.
Progression pathway:
- Year 9 establishes core scientific principles through Entry Level Science
- Year 10 develops foundations further through Entry Level Further Science
- Year 11 consolidates all learning and prepares pupils intensively for IGCSE Combined Science examinations
Differentiation strategies include: Differentiated reading texts and worksheets, scaffolded practical activities with step-by-step guides, tiered questioning (Confidence Building, Secure, Fluent), visual aids and models, and flexible grouping with peer and adult support.
Trauma-informed approach: Predictable lesson structure and clear learning objectives reduce anxiety. Consistent adult support provides security. Practical activities offer alternative ways to demonstrate understanding, reducing pressure. Flexible assessment timing allows pupils to attempt Entry Level tests when emotionally ready, with minimum 2-week gaps between retakes.
Skills development: Every lesson includes opportunities to develop literacy through reading differentiated texts, scientific vocabulary development, writing practical methods and conclusions, and answering comprehension questions. Numeracy skills are embedded throughout including measuring accurately, reading scales, calculating averages, plotting and interpreting graphs, using formulae, and working with units.

Academic Progress and Achievement
Our progressive qualification pathway from Entry Level to IGCSE ensures every pupil can achieve recognition for their progress. Pupils achieve Entry Level Science (Year 9), Entry Level Further Science (Year 10), and work towards IGCSE Combined Science (Year 11), with qualifications matched to individual capabilities.
Regular low-stakes assessment and retrieval practice ensure pupils build on prior learning and can apply scientific concepts across different contexts. Pupils progress from basic laboratory safety and equipment use to designing and conducting independent investigations, demonstrating increasing confidence in practical work.
Personal Development and Confidence
Hands-on learning allows pupils to experience success in different ways, with many pupils who struggle with traditional academic approaches finding their strengths through practical work. The investigative nature of science encourages pupils to persevere when experiments don't go as planned, developing crucial life skills for managing challenges. The predictable lesson structure and trauma-informed approach help pupils feel secure, reducing anxiety and enabling them to engage more fully with learning.
Communication and Transferable Skills
Pupils progress from supported group writing to independent extended responses, with improved ability to express scientific ideas clearly through discussion and written work. Mathematical skills including calculations, graph work, and data analysis are embedded in meaningful contexts, strengthening pupils' confidence with numbers. Pupils learn to analyse evidence, evaluate conclusions, and think logically—skills that transfer to decision-making in their personal lives.
Preparation for Life Beyond School
Understanding nutrition, disease prevention, and drug safety equips pupils to make informed choices about their wellbeing. Knowledge of energy resources, climate change, and ecosystems enables pupils to understand their environmental responsibilities. Scientific literacy and practical skills support progression to further education, training, or employment, with pupils able to navigate their lives with greater confidence and independence.
Monitoring and Evaluation
We measure impact through ongoing assessment (practical observation, questioning, and short tasks), qualification outcomes (Entry Level and IGCSE results), pupil voice (regular feedback about confidence and engagement), destination data (tracking next steps), and work scrutiny (reviewing progression in knowledge and skills).
