Why We Study Horticulture

Horticulture at Ramsden Hall Academy provides our pupils with SEMH needs with essential practical skills, therapeutic connection to nature, and pathways to employment in the growing sector. Through hands-on growing, plant care, and outdoor work in our horseshoe garden, we provide opportunities for students to develop confidence, patience, and self-esteem whilst nurturing living plants from seed to harvest.

Our curriculum develops knowledgeable, skilled learners who understand plant propagation, growing techniques, pest and disease management, and sustainable gardening practices. We recognise that working with plants and spending time outdoors provides powerful therapeutic benefits for pupils with SEMH needs—reducing anxiety, supporting emotional regulation, building patience through observing growth cycles, and creating tangible evidence of achievement through successful harvests. The natural environment offers a calm, non-judgmental space where pupils can experience success at their own pace.

By progressing from basic seed sowing and plant identification through to independent growing, maintenance planning, and harvesting, our Horticulture curriculum prepares students for their next steps in education, training or employment. Understanding how to grow food, care for plants, work safely outdoors, and maintain gardens equips pupils with practical skills for independent living and careers in horticulture, landscaping, garden maintenance, and agriculture. Through the NCFE Level 1 Occupational Studies in Garden Horticulture qualification, we ensure pupils leave Ramsden Hall Academy with both practical competencies and accredited achievements that open doors to apprenticeships, further education, and employment opportunities in the green sector.


Our Five Aims

1. Develop Practical Horticultural Skills and Plant Knowledge
Pupils will build competence across seed sowing, propagation, transplanting, plant care, weeding, pest management, and harvesting, developing the fundamental skills needed to grow plants successfully. By mastering indoor and outdoor sowing techniques, understanding germination requirements, learning to identify plants and weeds, and caring for plants through their full life cycle, pupils develop practical capabilities valued in horticulture, landscaping, and food production sectors.

2. Experience the Therapeutic Benefits of Working with Nature
Every pupil will experience the calming, regulating effects of outdoor work and connection with living plants. Through regular engagement with the natural environment, observing seasonal changes, nurturing plants from seed to harvest, and experiencing the satisfaction of successful growing, pupils develop emotional regulation strategies, patience, mindfulness, and a deep connection to nature that supports their wellbeing throughout their lives.

Pupils will develop knowledge of germination requirements, plant development stages, growing conditions, pest and disease identification, and sustainable growing practices. By learning about plant needs including water, light, temperature and nutrients, understanding how environmental conditions affect growth, identifying and managing pests and diseases organically, and implementing sustainable practices, pupils develop scientific understanding and environmental responsibility.

Understanding how to grow plants commercially, maintain gardens professionally, work safely outdoors, follow maintenance schedules, and produce quality crops prepares pupils for apprenticeships, further education, or employment in the growing green sector whilst fostering lifelong engagement with gardening and food production.


How We Teach Horticulture

Curriculum Structure

Our Horticulture curriculum operates as a year-long practical programme for Years 9, 10, and 11, working towards the NCFE Level 1 Occupational Studies in Garden Horticulture qualification covering Unit 01 and Unit 02. Pupils work in our outdoor horseshoe garden using grow bags and appropriate tools, following the natural growing seasons to develop comprehensive horticultural skills.

Autumn Term establishes foundations through understanding course structure, health and safety protocols for outdoor work, and identifying suitable plants for grow bag cultivation including three varieties of flowers (marigolds, petunias, pansies) and three varieties of vegetables (tomatoes, lettuce, herbs). Pupils learn to identify six common weeds (dandelion, nettle, bindweed, groundsel, chickweed, dock) and apply appropriate manual control measures including hand pulling, hoeing, and mulching. Understanding germination requirements—water, oxygen, appropriate temperature, and light—leads to practical indoor seed sowing in trays with appropriate growing medium. Pupils learn to identify outdoor sowing equipment including dibbers, rakes, hoes, line and pins, and measuring sticks, before preparing grow bags and sowing seeds directly outdoors following correct depth and spacing. Temperature protection methods using fleece, cloches, and strategic positioning protect young plants, whilst understanding damping off disease and seedling development stages prepares pupils for transplanting using appropriate equipment. The term concludes with portfolio assessment of practical work completed.

Spring Term builds skills through reviewing autumn learning and planning spring growing activities. Pupils sow tubers (potatoes) in grow bags using correct depth and spacing, transplant rooted plants (strawberry runners, herb plants), and sow seeds requiring protection (courgettes, beans) in trays under glass in greenhouse or cold frame. Learning thinning techniques ensures appropriate spacing for healthy growth, whilst following maintenance plans develops routine care including watering, weeding, checking for pests, and supporting plants. Pricking out seedlings and transplanting into prepared grow bags with correct spacing develops precision and care. Identifying common pests (aphids, slugs, caterpillars) and diseases (mildew, blight) enables appropriate management. Understanding how light, temperature, water, and nutrients affect plant development informs growing decisions. Learning why and how to harden off plants—acclimatising them gradually to outdoor conditions—prepares for final planting out with appropriate care and support structures. The term concludes with portfolio development compiling evidence for assessment.

Summer Term focuses on maintenance, harvest, and completion through reviewing spring planting and creating detailed summer maintenance schedules. Ongoing maintenance and monitoring of all grow bag plantings with regular recording develops responsibility and observation skills. Practical pest and disease management implements appropriate organic control measures for issues identified. Learning when and how to harvest different crops, understanding post-harvest care, and recording yields demonstrates the full growing cycle. Final assessment preparation and portfolio completion ensures all practical evidence is documented. Evaluating the growing season, reflecting on successes and challenges, and making recommendations for future growing develops critical thinking. End of season grow bag maintenance, tool care, and preparation for next year's growing develops professional practices. The course concludes with celebration of achievement, sharing produce and portfolios, final assessment and feedback sessions, and transition planning discussing progression opportunities in horticulture.

Building Knowledge and Skills from Varied Starting Points

All pupils begin with introductory activities establishing expectations for outdoor work, exploring the horseshoe garden site, and assessing prior experience with plants and gardening. We recognise that students enter lessons at different ability levels and comfort with outdoor environments and living things, and differentiation plays a key role in allowing all to be engaged and challenged within sessions.

Skills are taught progressively, beginning with basic techniques before advancing to complex processes. Autumn Term establishes foundational skills including plant and weed identification, basic seed sowing indoors and outdoors, understanding germination needs, and simple plant care. Spring Term builds competence through transplanting techniques, maintenance routines, pest and disease identification, understanding growing conditions, and hardening off procedures. Summer Term develops independence through ongoing maintenance responsibility, pest management decision-making, harvest timing judgments, and evaluation of growing success.

Each project revisits and reinforces core skills whilst introducing new techniques. Sowing skills progress from simple indoor sowing in trays in Autumn through outdoor sowing in grow bags to sowing tubers and rooted plants in Spring. Plant care develops from basic watering and weeding in Autumn through implementing maintenance plans in Spring to independent ongoing maintenance and pest management in Summer. Understanding plant development advances from germination requirements in Autumn through seedling stages and transplanting in Spring to hardening off, planting out, and harvest timing in Summer.

Differentiation is embedded throughout with visual aids for safety rules and plant identification, buddy systems for support and EAL learners, picture cards and simplified charts for lower ability pupils, extension tasks researching growing conditions for higher ability pupils, step-by-step visual guides for practical tasks, pre-measured or pre-prepared materials reducing complexity, adapted tools and grips where needed, peer support and group work, and individual feedback sessions. Mixed ability groups allow peer learning, whilst differentiated assessment criteria ensure all pupils can demonstrate achievement at their level.

Trauma-Informed Teaching Approach

Our Horticulture teaching reflects trauma-informed practice through creating safe, predictable outdoor environments where pupils feel known and valued. The horseshoe garden features clearly defined boundaries, consistent routines including settling, practical work, and reflection, visual safety rules and task breakdowns, and quiet zones for regulation when needed, reducing anxiety about outdoor work.

We recognise that outdoor activities and responsibility for living things can trigger anxiety, and some pupils may have negative associations with nature or fear of failure when plants don't thrive. We respond with patience and understanding, celebrating effort and care rather than only successful harvests. Plant failures are explicitly valued as learning opportunities, creating a culture where pupils feel safe to experiment and learn from what doesn't work. Staff remain calm and supportive, providing alternative activities when pupils are dysregulated, allowing them to step away if overwhelmed, and using restorative approaches when conflicts arise.

The natural environment provides powerful therapeutic benefits that we explicitly harness. Working with soil and plants offers sensory regulation through tactile experiences. Observing slow plant growth develops patience and understanding that meaningful results take time. Nurturing living things builds empathy and sense of purpose. Harvesting produce creates tangible evidence of achievement and contribution. Solo time in the garden provides mindfulness and grounding opportunities. The calm, non-judgmental outdoor space allows pupils to regulate emotions and process experiences through connection with nature.

Pupils have significant choice and control throughout their growing journey. They choose which varieties to grow within structured frameworks, select their preferred maintenance tasks, decide on spacing and positioning within guidelines, and plan individual growing projects. Pupils vote for plants to grow, choose ingredients for cooking harvested produce, select focus plants for detailed observation, and design their own growing experiments, maintaining agency over their horticultural learning.

We build trusting relationships through personalised feedback during practical work, small group work based on confidence levels, celebrating individual progress with photographic documentation and harvest celebrations, and regular one-to-one check-ins about plants and progress. Staff are trained to recognise when pupils are becoming dysregulated and provide regulation breaks, adapted tasks, or quiet time in designated garden zones as needed.

Typical Session Structure

Sessions begin with Settling and Site Check (5-10 minutes) where pupils arrive at the horseshoe garden, understand expectations for the session, complete safety checks and identify appropriate PPE, and see clear learning objectives displayed. This provides predictability and allows pupils to transition from indoor to outdoor learning. Introduction and Demonstration (10-15 minutes) follows, with the teacher demonstrating new techniques using think-aloud to make horticultural decision-making visible, showing examples of healthy plants or completed tasks, and explaining tools, materials and safety procedures clearly with visual supports.

Guided Practice (10-15 minutes) has pupils begin experimenting with techniques with close teacher support, working through initial stages with scaffolding and immediate feedback, and developing confidence before independent work. Independent Practical Work (30-40 minutes) allows pupils to work on their growing tasks at their own pace with differentiated support, choosing their approaches and techniques within the activity framework, accessing tools and materials independently with supervision, and receiving targeted support from teacher and learning support assistant as needed.

Reflection and Site Closure (10-15 minutes) reviews learning through "What did we learn about plants today?", allows pupils to share observations or explain their growing processes, addresses any challenges or questions, and previews the next session. Pupils regularly photograph their plants and work, complete self-assessments using journals or verbal reflection, and engage in peer feedback using constructive language. The session concludes with tool cleaning and storage, site tidy-up, and safe departure. Regulation breaks, movement between activities, and quiet observation time are built in as needed throughout.

Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Development

Every session includes opportunities to develop literacy through learning horticulture-specific vocabulary including germination, propagation, sowing, transplanting, pricking out, hardening off, thinning, maintenance, mulching, compost, grow bag, dibber, drill, fleece, cloche, damping off, pest, disease, aphid, slug, mildew, blight, harvest, tuber, rooted plant, spacing, depth. Vocabulary is explicitly taught through verbal and visual demonstrations, written labels and plant identification guides, and regular use in discussions and maintenance logs.

Literacy develops significantly through reading seed packet instructions and plant care guides, writing maintenance logs and observation records, creating plant identification booklets with descriptions, presenting research findings about plants and pests, recording planting and harvest dates with reflections, and evaluating growing success with recommendations. Pupils learn to follow sequential written instructions, describe observations accurately using scientific vocabulary, and communicate their horticultural thinking clearly through various formats including verbal, written, photographic and practical demonstration.

Numeracy skills are embedded throughout including measuring sowing depths and plant spacing accurately, reading and recording temperatures for plant protection, calculating spacing between plants in rows, measuring plant growth over time and recording data, counting and recording harvest yields, understanding calendar skills for planting schedules, timing maintenance routines and recording completion, and measuring quantities of compost, water, and mulch. Practical mathematics in authentic growing contexts makes numeracy meaningful and relevant, with pupils developing confidence in applying mathematical skills to real-life horticultural situations.

Alternative recording methods ensure all pupils can demonstrate their learning including verbal explanations recorded or filmed, photographic documentation of plants at different stages, practical demonstration of techniques, peer discussions about growing processes and choices, and visual presentations rather than only written work.

SMSC, British Values and Modern Britain

SMSC: Horticulture lessons explore moral and ethical issues through understanding environmental stewardship and sustainable growing, respecting living things and taking responsibility for plant care, organic pest management avoiding harmful chemicals, food production and reducing food miles, and seasonal eating and connection to natural cycles. Pupils consider the importance of protecting nature, the impact of food production on the environment, and how growing skills support wellbeing, independence, and community contribution. Spiritual development occurs through mindfulness in the garden, observing the wonder of plant growth, and deep connection with natural cycles.

Topics like food security, climate change impacts on growing, sustainable agriculture, and mental health benefits of gardening are handled in age-appropriate ways through hands-on growing projects, harvest celebrations, and discussions about professional horticultural practices.
